Halberstam is the author of Skin Shows: Gothic Horror and the Technology of Monsters (Duke University Press, 1995), Female Masculinity (Duke University Press, 1998), In A Queer Time and Place (NYU Press, 2005), The Queer Art of Failure (Duke University Press, 2011) and Gaga Feminism: Sex, Gender, and the End of Jack Halberstam is the recipient of the 2018 Arcus/Places Prize. The prize is awarded biennially as a unique collaboration between the Diversity Platforms Committee of the College of Environmental Design at University of California, Berkeley, and Places. Jack Halberstam is the recipient of the 2018 Arcus/Places Prize for innovative public scholarship on gender, sexuality, and the built environment, a collaboration between the College of Environmental Design at UC Berkeley and Places, supported by the Arcus Endowment. I really believe in low theory, low culture, and, like Jacques Rancière, I do believe in the “intellectual adventure” that lies beyond the “explicative order” and, furthermore, that one must unlearn mastery. Jack Halberstam, a radical social thinker whose critiques have transformed our notions of queer theory and representation, has never shied away from necessary battles—from decoding patriarchal masculinity and the stasis of the straight white gaze to offering alternative notions of value in queer life. A professor at Columbia, Halberstam has just finished his latest book, Wild Things, which These enormous questions are at the heart of Jack Halberstam’s recent book Wild Things: The Disorder of Desire.
